Brent Checkosis will have to wait a bit longer to hear his sentence on his accessory after the fact to murder charge at Queen’s Bench Court in Battleford.

While court heard submissions today, the sentencing for Checkosis will take place March 25.

Checkosis pleaded guilty on Dec. 20, 2019 to accessory after the fact to the murder of Tiki Laverdiere on May 1 in North Battleford. Checkosis was one of eight people charged in relation to Laverdiere’s homicide.

The court ordered a publication ban on all details of the proceedings, including evidence, and victim impact statements until the judge or jury, depending on the matter, involving all the other seven accused have retired to consider their verdict.

Checkosis did not enter any plea to the outstanding charges of improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

Laverdiere, 25, was reported missing on May 12, 2019. She was last seen in North Battleford on May 1. Human remains were found in a rural area outside of North Battleford on July 11 and confirmed to be the Edmonton woman on July 16.

Another of the individuals facing charges, Mavis Takakenew, also charged with accessory after the fact to murder in the case, is scheduled to appear in court this afternoon. She has not entered a plea to the charge yet.
