AAA Stars look to stay hot in return to action Thursday

The Battlefords AAA Stars return to action Thursday night for their first game action since a red letter weekend against the Notre Dame Argos.

The team is coming off a weekend showing that saw the Stars pick up back-to-back 4-0 and 5-0 shutout victories over the Argos, to kick off the new month of December at the Civic Centre.

It has been a bit of an up and down season for the AAA Stars, who enter action Thursday against the Saskatoon Contacts in ninth spot of the Saskatchewan Midget Hockey League (SMHL) standings at 8-12-2 on the year.

Head coach of the Stars, Brett Parker, said he is confident the team’s back-to-back victories can help turn the tide for the group this season.

“It is definitely a positive weekend,” he said. “October being on the road [was a bit of a tough stretch,] but we have had our adversity and now it is up to us to try and use those lessons learned and keep moving forward. It starts with good work ethic and that’s what we see at practice so hopefully we see that translate into upcoming games here in December, because we have some tough games coming up.”

A large key to the team’s success of late has been the play of 16-year-old goaltender, Jackson Fellner, who picked up each of the club’s two shutouts last weekend.

With the wins, the Regina product, Fellner, has now posted a sparkling 2.33 goals-against average and .920 save percentage through 13 games this year.

Parker said the goalie’s poise and controlled demeanor between the pipes, breeds confidence throughout the rest of the team as well.

“Definitely one of his strengths is just his calmness in net and his ability to put pucks into areas for our defencemen,” Parker said. “He has been right there to make the big save when we need it; he did that on the weekend. He was ready, prepared and came up with some big saves to earn the shutouts.”

Thursday’s game against the Contacts will be played at Marlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon. The team return to the Civic Centre Dec. 10 against Prince Albert.
