Beckman returns to the AAA Stars

Oct 3, 2017 | 12:00 PM

Just over a month ago, Adam Beckman signed a standard players agreement with the Western Hockey League’s Spokane Chiefs.

At the time, it was looking like last year’s AAA Stars leading scorer might stick with the club for the foreseeable future, at least until the Chiefs got all of their veterans back from National Hockey League traning camps. Two days after signing the agreement, Jaret Anderson-Dolan was sent back to Spokane by the Los Angeles Kings and Adam Beckman was cut from the active Chiefs roster, meaning he is now back with the AAA Stars sooner than initially expected.

He was kept on the Chiefs protected list and will likely stick with them next season.

“Both Adam [Beckman] and Declan [Hobbs] have done everything we’ve asked and we will keep them on our list,” Chiefs general manager Scott Carter said in a team press release. “This move will allow them to play more minutes in a more significant role.”

Indeed, it will be plenty of additional minutes for Beckman as a AAA Star. He played in one game in the Chiefs opening weekend and had to play on the wing on the fourth line, where he did not record a point or shot on goal.

Back in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League, the sky is the limit for him.

Last year as a 15-year-old rookie, he nearly had a point per game, scoring 15 goals and adding 26 assists in 44 games on a team that missed the playoffs. Now, he’s grown a few inches and can bring what he learned at the major junior level back to the Battlefords.

The Saskatoon native is expected to centre the Stars’ top line between Ty Mosimann and Damon McKenzie, who already have four and three points respectively in two games this season.

The Stars head to Swift Current this weekend for a pair of games against the Legionnaires. Swift Current is 2-2 this season, following wins over the Saskatoon Blazers and Tisdale Trojans, and losses to Moose Jaw and Prince Albert.

Those two games are set for Saturday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 8 at 12:45 p.m.

More to come.
