Prairie North CEO expecting changes after review panel announced

According to the CEO of the Prairie North Health Region, health care in the area will look different after a provincial review announced earlier this week.

On Thursday Aug. 18, Health Minister Dustin Duncan announced a three-member advisory panel will review the province’s 12 health regions, including Prairie North. It is expected the number of regions will shrink and changes will be made to those which remain.

Prairie North CEO David Fan said it’s fair to say there will be fewer health regions at the end of the review but it’s too early to speculate on how many regions there will be and what the coverage area may look like.

“Will Prairie North exist as we know it today? Probably not. Again, what it would be in the future, I’m not sure at this point,” he said.

Fan said the review was expected after it was first announced in the provincial budget.

“We have been anticipating the announcement for quite some time so when it was finally announced, I think it doesn’t come as a surprise. I think I’m quite happy that the process is actually getting going,” he said.

According to Fan, it is business as usual right now but there is an aura of foreboding in Prairie North.

“I think there is a fair bit of anxiety going through the system,” Fan said. “Which is understandable as people are trying to figure out what does it mean for them in terms of future employment, who will they be working for, what the system will be looking like and so on and so forth.”

The three panel members are Brenda Abrametz, chair of the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region, Dr. Dennis Kendel of Saskatoon, the CEO of the Physician Recruitment Agency of Saskatchewan and Tyler Bragg of Swift Current, the CEO of Pinnacle Financial Serves and former chair of the Cypress Health Region.

Fan said all three panel members are very well respected in the Saskatchewan health care system.

“They understand the health system very well. They have a very intrinsic appreciation of what Saskatchewan is about. So instead of recruiting some high-priced consultants from afar, this is the best outcome,” he said.
