Midget AA Beavers look for 1st win of young season

May 12, 2017 | 5:00 PM

Last summer was a memorable season for the North Battleford Beavers midget AA squad.

They took home a provincial title on home soil in late July, not long after making it all the way to the finals of the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League, where they were narrowly fell 8-7 to Moose Jaw.

This season, only three players return, so things have not started out quite as smoothly.

The Beavers dropped the first four games of their season last weekend, two games to the White Butte Broncos and then two games to the defending champion Moose Jaw Canucks. Last year, North Battleford began the season with a 2-1-1 record.

The hope is things can start to turn around this weekend, as the club has another four games.

First, they’ll take on the Lumsden Cubs for a double-header on Saturday on the road, and then they’ll travel to up to Marysburg, Sask., to take on the Humboldt Dodgers.

The Cubs are 1-1-1 so far this season while Humboldt has yet to play a game, as their season opener is set for Saturday against the Regina Blue Jays.

After this next string of road games, the Beavers will finally get in a string of home games, beginning on Saturday, May 20. That Saturday will mark the first of 10 straight home games on the schedule from May 20 until June 10.
