Spiritwood artist has 5 SCMA nominations

An artist born and raised in Spiritwood is getting his name noticed again at the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards (SCMA).

Last year Brody Siebert was nominated for four SCMAs, but walked away empty handed. The country artist is nominated for five this year, but said he doesn’t want to get his hopes up too high.

“I’m a little more [hopeful] but I never really get myself too overly excited about things. It’s just a good way to let yourself down if you don’t win. So if I get something I’ll be more than happy,” Siebert said. “I just think that good music should be honored in any way it can. I thought that there was obviously some other people up in those categories that did some really great work this year as well.”

Out of all the categories he was nominated in, including Song of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year, Siebert said the nomination he was most surprised about was Album of the Year, for his latest album Lonely Town.

“There were a lot of people who dropped a lot of music this year that was really good,” Siebert said. “I was really happy with that one; I think that one stands out the most out of everything because I know we put a lot of hard work into that album.”

After the SMCAs, Siebert said he plans to pack his bags for Nashville to make the country music capital his new home, but said he won’t be forgetting his prairie roots any time soon.

“Spiritwood has always been a big part of my life. I go back there as much as I possibly can and I love to spend time out there,” Siebert said. “They always called it God’s Country out there and it always helps me.”

The artist said going back home always gives him a boost when he can’t seem to find his creativity.

“It’s always helped me be able to pull out some sort of creative flow,” he said. “Whenever I’m stuck in a rut and I can’t write anything, I usually just venture home and it usually takes that away.”

The Saskatchewan Country Music Awards will be presented in April.
