Beaver Blues sweep Glaslyn

The Battleford Beaver Blues have swept the Glaslyn North Stars in the opening round of the Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League playoffs after a 5-2 win in game three.

They won game one 8-2 and game two 3-2 in double overtime.

Leading the way on Thursday night to help clinch was Cody Danberg, who had a hat trick and two assists for a five-point night.

His linemates, captain Brent Salzl and Mike George, each had multi-point nights as well. George had a goal and two assists, while Salzl had a goal and one assist.

“The top line steps up for us and then our bottom three grind it out,” said Beaver Blues forward Mitch Phillips. “It’s a big team effort but we’ve got to give a lot [of credit] to that ‘dream team,’ that top line of Danberg, Salzl and Georg. They’re lights out.”

Having home ice advantage certainly helped Battleford, as the one road game need extra time before the Beaver Blues nabbed the win.

“They gave us a good fight,” Danberg said. “We took advantage of our home ice that we had. They played a really solid game in game two but we regrouped and came home here and knew that we didn’t want to go back there. A little bit of a slow start tonight but we stuck with it and came out on top.”

When asked about how his line keeps producing – they combined for 152 points in 47 games in the regular season – Danberg said familiarity and not wasting opportunities have led to success.

“We’ve had that chemistry all season,” he said. “Teams key on us and limit our space but we’ve found a way to kind of open it up and exploit some of their players and we just cashed in when we needed to.”

Battleford will now wait for the winner between Edam Three Stars and the Maymont Settlers in the semifinal. Edam, the two seed, leads Maymont 2-0, with game three scheduled for Friday night.

If Edam wins, they will play Battleford and have home ice advantage as well.

“They’re just heavy hitters,” Phillips said of Edam. “They’re a big solid team.

“We’ve just got to stay out of penalty trouble and stay out of the box and we can skate with them.”

Battleford won the season series against Edam 2-0, winning 4-3 and 8-5.
