Outlaws, Red Lions, Mohawks advance at senior provincials

Feb 15, 2017 | 8:57 AM

The Wilkie Outlaws lost one game all season long in the Sask West Hockey League regular season, but the provincials were a new test because they were moving up into the ‘A’ bracket for the first time.

They passed round one of that test by defeating the Meadow Lake Broncos in three games to get to the second round.

Wilkie lost game one 6-5 but won game two 5-2 and game three 4-0. They will now play the Prairie Outlaws from Waldeim in the quarter-finals, who took out Lanigan in their first round series, winning 4-1 and 6-3.

Game one of the Outlaws vs. Outlaws will be Sunday, Feb. 19. Game two will be the following Saturday, Feb. 25. If necessary, game three will be the next day, Feb. 26.

Wilkie wasn’t alone in Sask West representatives moving on to round two, as the Kindersley Red Lions and Macklin Mohawks also won their opening round matchups, Kindersley over Hague in three games in the ‘A’ bracket and Macklin over Rosetown in ‘C’.

Kindersley defeated Hague in round one after winning the deciding third game 3-2. Macklin had little trouble with Rosetown in their series, winning their games 9-1 and 8-4.

The Red Lions will face Wakaw in round two and Macklin has a date with Eston.

Luseland is a fourth team Sask West team that is still alive at provincials, but an odd number of teams in the ‘B’ bracket meant they haven’t had to play a game yet. They take on Outlook, with game dates and time yet to be determined, although the series must wrap up by Feb. 27.

Teams not getting out of the first round were Biggar and Eatonia.

The Biggar Nationals lost to Watrous 7-0 and 9-7 in ‘B’, while the Eatonia Huskies lost to Eston 7-1 and 5-3.

Two Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League representatives also entered provincials and only one is still alive.

The Shellbrook Silvertips were eliminated from ‘C’ after falling to Delisle, while the Edam Three Stars are still wrapping up their ‘D’ bracket series with the Kyle Elks. Edam lost game one 3-2 and will play game two on Feb. 25.
