Fishing Derby to raise funds for First Nations

Jan 29, 2017 | 7:00 AM

An upcoming fishing derby will help fund recreation activities for two local First Nations.

The second annual Murray Lake Fishing Derby is coming up Feb. 18. Proceeds from the event will go towards the Moosomin and Saulteaux First Nations and their parks and recreation activities, Moosomin Chief Brad Swiftwolfe said.

The money raised will be split in half between the First Nations, Swiftwolfe said, and will fund activities like soccer, hockey and round dancing in the communities.

Last year the derby netted $20,000, and with an even greater attendance expected this year, they’re hoping to beat that total. There were roughly 300 participants at the first annual event, and 350 passes have already been sold in advance this time around.

Swiftwolfe pointed out the event is coming at a good time, as it lines up with Free Fishing Weekend in Saskatchewan, which runs Feb. 18-20.

Murray Lake will be the event’s location.

Two ATVs will be up for grabs as major prizes this year. Registration for the event starts at 10 a.m., and fishing time starts at 1.
