Battlefords boasts great locations for Free Fishing Weekend

Feb 18, 2017 | 8:00 AM

The area around the Battlefords isn’t short of lakes to drop lines into during Free Fishing Weekend.

The provincial weekend, from Feb. 18-20, allows anyone fish in the province, with no licence required.

Coming up Feb. 18 is the 2nd Annual Murray Lake Fishing Derby. While no licence fee is required, there is a $75 entry fee and $25 for a second hole. Funds raised will go towards the Moosomin and Saulteaux First nations, with two ATVs up for grabs as the top prizes.

The First Annual Meota Hotel Ice Fishing Derby is also being held on Saturday at Jackfish Lake. Tickets are $15, or $30 with supper included. Following super and prizes, there will be an open mic jam session with The Evening Shift Band.

There is a huge selection of locations available for those who don’t want to compete in a derby. According to Tourism Saskatchewan, the province boasts nearly 100,000 lakes and rivers for fishers to choose from, which are home to a wide variety of species.

According to SportFish Junkies, some of the best fishing locations in the Battlefords region include Winniford Lake, Jackfish Lake and Eightmile Lake.
