SCMA nominee Aces Wyld has local ties

Mar 10, 2017 | 11:00 AM

After being together only three years, the trio Aces Wyld has already gotten some recognition at the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards (SCMAs).

Comprised of Steve Andrew, Brett Browatzke, and Sam Derbawka, the band’s been nominated for Group of the Year at the SMCAs this year.

Frontman Andrew said being nominated wasn’t necessarily a surprise, but rewarding nonetheless.

“I wouldn’t say it was a shock. We were kind of hoping for it but I guess to make the final ballot is definitely, definitely an honour,” he said. “We’ve definitely worked for it so it’s nice to be getting some recognition. We have a lot of fellow peers in there too so we’re rooting for everybody.”

Born and raised in Wilkie, Andrew is no stranger to the area or North Battleford itself.

“From Wilkie I actually moved to North Battleford and I was building houses there for a while and I got into power lining and from there I moved to Saskatoon,” he said. “And that’s really when I started getting into music.”

However, he said that home is always home.

“No matter how old you get, going back to mom and dad, going back to the farm and seeing your family and your friends, especially on holidays,” he said. “I try to get back as often as I can.”

He isn’t the only one with local ties either. Fiddle, mandolin, and banjo player, Sam Derbawka, currently calls the Battlefords his home.

“He is easily one of the best musicians in Saskatchewan in my opinion. He is so phenomenal and he is right there in North Battleford which is kind of crazy because no one really knows that he exists as far as the musical world goes,” he said. “I hope he gets the recognition that he deserves sometime here.”

After the SMCAs winners are announced in April, Aces Wyld has big plans, including releasing another album, another single, and will be heading off to Toronto to play at Canadian Music Week.
