Boys and Girls Club kids celebrate the holidays with their families

Members of the Battlefords Boys and Girls Club were treated to a restaurant-quality feast for Christmas.

Turkey, gravy, stuffing, veggies and ham were on the menu at their annual Christmas dinner for kids of the club and their families on Wednesday, Dec. 21.

Nicole Combres, executive director with the club, said their dinner is a special occasion since they bring all three of their sites together to celebrate as one.

“We think it’s important for everyone to come together as one (to) celebrate the holidays and just make sure that all of our families have the opportunity to have a Christmas meal and celebrate like we want,” she said.

As Combres pointed out, not all families in attendance were fortunate enough to have big holiday celebrations.

“Now I’m not saying that’s the reality for all of our families and children, but that is the reality for some and that’s already too many,” she said.

Battlefords North Stars players left the ice to join the kids, trading their sticks for crayons as they coloured and talked with the kids.

It wouldn’t be the holidays without a visit from Santa Claus. He dropped by to hand out a present from the club for each member.

Combres said the night couldn’t have happened without the help from the good Samaritans from a local supper club, who both provided and cooked the food for the night.

“They’re donating their time, they’re donating the food and they enjoy coming back each and every year to serve the children and their families a great meal and we couldn’t do this Christmas supper without them,” she said.

The Boys and Girls club can see up to 50 kids an evening on a daily basis.
