Council appointed to committees before the New Year

Dec 20, 2016 | 4:00 PM

At the last town council meeting before 2017, Mayor Ames Leslie appointed members to the boards and committees they’ll occupy for the next two years.

“We are going to look at two year terms on the board and committee appointments. Part of that is we are there to help bring representation from the council and town to those committees and boards, not necessarily become specialist in their area,” Leslie said. “It also gives the opportunity for everybody in the council to experience each of those boards and committees as well.”

Each councillor, including the mayor himself, will sit on three boards each.

Mayor Leslie will sit on the River Valley Settlement board, along with Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Community Development Corporation (BATC CDC) and Table Mountain boards.

Incumbent councillor Doug Laing will join the mayor on the River Valley Settlement, as well as on Fire Protection and Occupational Health.

Susan McLean Tady, re-joining council for her third term, was appointed to the Government House board, Destinations Battlefords, and tentatively, the Opera House. The Opera House is still rebuilding their committee, said Leslie, and if or when they reconvene, McLean Tady will join it as a member of council.

Also on the Government House committee is Councillor Gordon Yarde, a veteran to Battlefords Town Council. The Government House is a landmark in the Battlefords area, constructed in the 1800s, and recognized for its historic value by the provincial government. Yarde was also appointed to Habitat for Humanity and the Library board, which includes both the local and provincial boards.

New to council this year, Judy Pruden was appointed to Communities in Bloom, Concern for Youth, and the Justice Committee.

Another new comer to council, Kevin Russell will sit on the Fire Protection board with Coun. Laing, fitting his experience with Battleford Fire Department for the last decade. He will also be part of the Battlefords Handi-Bus and Access Communications boards for the next two years.

Finally, Shelly Boutin-Gervais, coming back for a second term, was appointed to the Battle River Settlement, Fred Light Museum and the Parks and Rec boards.

Council and Mayor will meet for their first council meeting of 2017 on Jan. 9.
