Habitat house still needs volunteers to complete project

Mar 31, 2017 | 5:00 PM

The first Habitat for Humanity house is nearing completion but still needs volunteer help before the occupants can move in.

Drywall is complete on one side and 80 per cent done on side B according to site coordinator Ron Braun. There is still work to be done though and Braun is looking for help.

“Anyone who wants to mud and tape the old school way, they’re welcome to come and I’ll teach them,” Braun said. “Sanding needs to be done for the final coat and the ladies [occupants] would appreciate someone to help with priming.”

Mud and tape is required to smooth the surface of the drywall, so when it is painted over the, joints and nail holes aren’t visible. Volunteers are also needed to sand down the drywall before primer can be applied.

Braun added the kitchen cabinets are just waiting on countertops and aside from that and the drywall, the flooring is the next major step. The site coordinator said he wasn’t sure when the flooring would be done because an outside company has been hired and it is based on their schedule.

Braun is optimistic the completion is on the horizon though. He hopes the occupants will be able to move in early June.

“When you’re doing a volunteer build like this; the community needs to understand it isn’t the same as a build where I have hired people,” Braun said. “I am the only hired person here. Keep it in perspective that a lot of it is being put together by me and there are two houses being done.”

Braun asked anyone who interested in volunteering to contact Habitat for Humanity through their Facebook page.

According to Braun the future occupants can’t move in until the house is complete and inspected by the city.
