PALLISER SUITE

Battlefords Community Players set to open triple act comedy

May 15, 2026 | 1:27 PM

Next week, a spotlight will shine onto the Battlefords Community Player stage, revealing a new performance.

This upcoming romantic comedy, Palliser Suite, features three separate plays, all based around one hotel room set which is patterned after a famous Calgary accommodation.

Andrew Miller and Danielle Barrett are two of the 10 actors, who make up the first act.

“We are the story of Mel and Edna. Mel is living in the hotel, and Edna discovers that they’re not actually divorced, which is a problem because Edna’s getting remarried,” said Barrett.

Miller described his character Melvin as a middle-aged, semi-retired man who started a chain of repair shops.

“He’s been living in the hotel for the last couple of years. He’s still involved in the business, but he’s more involved in helping out around the hotel and doing a lot of jobs here and there at the hotel.”

While Edna, Barrett’s character, is described as a housewife who helped in the family business.

“She’s just really changed her life around and adapted to her new situation and taking on new things in her life and really kind of discovering who she is,” said Barrett.

Although community members will view the performances simultaneously, none of the other act performers have worked together.

“We never really see them, Barrett explained. “They’re two totally separate stories; we are totally separate.”

Helping to bring the performance to life is first time director, Marno Auchstaetter.

“I’ve been in over 40 shows and in the club for 40 years. They finally bullied me into directing,” he laughed. “It’s been good!”

He said the hardest part of stepping into a director’s role is not interfering with the actors on stage.

“You have to stop yourself from going up there and saying, ‘this is how I would do it’, because you have to go with the actor’s take.”

Auchstaetter is unsure if he will continue as director in upcoming performances. For now, he is focused on ensuring every detail is perfect for the opening night on Wednesday.

Community members will have the opportunity to watch this unique production during several dates this month. To purchase tickets, contact Battlefords Community Players.
