High profile jazz musicians to play the Dekker Centre

May 9, 2017 | 8:00 AM

Two musicians are coming to North Battleford this week that are bound to get the community jazzed up.

Renowned pianist, Tommy Banks, and CBC Radio 2’s Tim Tamashiro will be performing at the Dekker Centre on Friday, May 12.

Moe McGinty, who is in charge of Facility Rentals at the Dekker Centre, says the crowd is in for a great show. “There will be lots of stories and joking around, and a very intimate evening,” McGinty said. “If you want a couple words to describe the night, it’ll be a lot of fun and the music will be incredible.”

Beginning his jazz debut in 1950, Banks’ career has taken him all over North America, Central and Western Europe, Southeast Asia, and even Japan. He has also won several awards for his musical efforts including a Juno and Gemini, and he was inducted into the Edmonton Cultural Hall of Fame.

As for Tamashiro, he has performed for several high profile individuals including a few prime ministers and Queen Elizabeth. Additionally, Tamashiro hosts a jazz show on CBC Radio 2 called Tonic, and has his own 24/7 stream on CBC Music called Tamashiro’s Tonic, which plays a selection of jazz music hand-picked by Tamashiro himself.

McGinty has been working closely with Banks and Tamashiro in scheduling the performance, and also praises their character. “In arranging the show with [Banks and Tamashiro], they’re really nice, sincere… just good guys,” he said. “Every season we have a couple [shows] that are going to be exceptional, and certainly this is one of those shows.”

Each ticket will cost $42.00 plus tax, and are available at the box office of the Dekker Centre.
