BTEC making the move into new building

While staff are setting up the new Battlefords Trade and Education Centre (BTEC) building, participants are getting excited to move in.

The new building officially opens to BTEC participants on Monday, Oct. 24, after a huge fundraising campaign and more than a year of construction.

Executive Director Mona Leece said one of the best parts of the new building for her is that it’s warm, bright and clean. The old building was dated and couldn’t be heated properly.

“It’s everything I expected and even more,” she said. “It’s a dream come true for I think everyone involved, participants and staff.”

The new building also has a lot more space, including pod rooms for activities, a kitchen, book store, art room, and medical rooms.

Some of BTEC’s 67 participants wanted to wait until Monday to see the new building, but most were taken through on tours last week.

“The majority of them came through and it was a great response, they were very happy and excited to get in here,” Leece said. “Some of them are non-verbal but you can see it in their faces when they walk in with a big smile on their face, you can tell they’re really happy.”

Leece said the support from the community has been overwhelming over the last couple of years. She said she can’t wait for the public to come in and see what they helped build.

The public is welcome to get a peek inside the new building on Nov. 4 at a grand opening celebration. There will be tours from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and a program at 2 p.m.

Although the building is finished, Leece said as a non-profit BTEC will always be fundraising to keep afloat. One of the next major fundraising goals is for a Snoezelen multi-sensory therapy room, which she said would be beneficial to the participants but also includes equipment that is very expensive.
