N.B. cats get new homes just in time for winter

Fifty-one felines have new homes, just in time for what looks like a harsh Saskatchewan winter.

The Battleford Humane Society’s recent cat sale offered cats for $100 off the regular adoption free, at a bargain of $50.

The shelter was over their manageable capacity, with over 80 cats in their care. Executive director at the shelter, Michelle Spark, said the maximum they can comfortably hold is 40 to 45 cats. After the sale, 34 cats remain.

“We’re manageable size,” Spark said. “We’re still pretty close to full because 34 to 45 is not a big jump. We’re still full, but we’re manageable now.”

According to Spark, people came from all over the region to adopt animals; from Saskatoon, to Maidstone, even from as far as Alberta.

The animal shelter held the same sale last year, but with a bit more success.

“The last cat sale we did, we adopted out 71 cats, I think in three days. When we were done, we were left with eight cats in the shelter. It was beautiful for winter because we were able to fill up again. This winter? I don’t know. We’ll have to see. It won’t take much for us to fill back up.”

Even though the sale didn’t live up to her expectations, she said she can’t complain.

“My goal was to adopt out all of them, and that didn’t happen, but I mean 51 cats finding a home in four days, you really can’t be disappointed. You can’t. It was amazing,” she said. “We said goodbye to a lot of kitties.”

Spark was happy that a lot of their “old-timers” or long term cats went with the sale. She said most of what they’re left with right now are kittens. There are some two-year-olds left, but most are under one.

The sale was held from Oct. 12 to 15.
