NBCHS Vikings season comes to an end after finals loss vs PA Carlton

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School Vikings ended their football season with a 28-9 loss to the Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders in Saturday’s league final.

“PA is a really well-coached team and they looked really good and ready to play that day,” said Vikings head coach Shaun Webster.

“We were slowing them down on defence and really making them work for the yards the way our defence was designed. Our offence couldn’t get going against them. We had a few big plays in the second half, but the first half we couldn’t really execute offensively.”

Webster said facing a strong Carlton team challenged his players’ confidence.

“They felt a bit like they weren’t doing as good as they normally do, but it’s because they’re playing also against a very good team,” he said.

“I think that was an eye-opener for them to realize, ‘Hey, you’re still doing good even though you’re not doing as good as you normally do against the other teams.’”

Despite the loss, Webster was pleased with his team’s improvement throughout the season.

“At the end of the day, it’s not always about winning the league. It’s just about those little things that you see athletes improve on and they can carry that throughout their life,” he said.

That progress came despite a small roster. Webster said attendance at the final two spring practices dropped to about 15 or 16 players, leaving him wondering whether the Vikings would have enough players to field a team.

The team went on to reach the league final, with several players learning the game in their first season and many having to play both offence and defence.

Now, with 14 Grade 12 players graduating, Webster estimates the Vikings will have about 17 or 18 returning players, making recruitment a priority for next season.

Webster hopes to give younger students more opportunities to try football, including potential six or nine-player games for Grade 9 and 10 students outside the senior team. He also hopes to introduce lunchtime flag football intramurals to help students become familiar with the sport.

Webster would like the Vikings to remain in the North League, but said low numbers could lead the team to explore a temporary move to a Saskatoon league. He described that as a possibility, with the goal of giving a young roster a chance to develop without discouraging players.

The Vikings head coach also encouraged younger players to get involved with the Bucks and older players to explore football academy opportunities in Saskatoon to continue developing outside the school season.

For now, his focus is on bringing more students into a program he said this year’s players enjoyed.

“It’s just needing more people to come out and do it. I think they would enjoy it,” he said.
