Oct 31, 2026 | 11:44 PM

The Battlefords North Stars failed to sweep the Weyburn Red Wings, falling 4-2 at home in a Halloween afternoon matchup.

Weyburn got on the board first at the 10:44 mark of the first period when Jaxson Doyle floated a puck on net from the point and past Nathan Claydon to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead.

The North Stars had a chance on a four-minute power play, but couldn’t get one past Nate Stevens, and the Red Wings took a lead into the intermission.

After one: 1-0 Red Wings, shots 14-8 North Stars

The Red Wings took a 2-0 lead just 30 seconds into the second period off the stick of Aiden Mohan, who scored on Claydon’s blocker side for his sixth goal of the season.

Later, the Red Wings had a power-play opportunity, but the North Stars scored their second shorthanded goal in as many games.

Kaleb Dewar was sprung on a breakaway and scored on the backhand for his fifth goal of the year to cut the Red Wings’ lead to 2-1 at 13:20.

However, Weyburn restored its two-goal lead when Teigan Semchysen scored a power-play goal from the point to put the Red Wings up 3-1 at 15:45.

After two: 3-1 Red Wings, shots 13-3 Red Wings, 21-17 Red Wings total

The third period was back and forth until the second half of the frame when the Red Wings ran into some serious penalty trouble.

They went down five-on-three, and the North Stars finally capitalized on the man advantage.

Raiden Zacharias’ initial shot rang off the post, but Michiel Leenders picked up the rebound and scored his fifth goal of the season at 12:41 to make it 3-2 Red Wings.

The Red Wings continued to take penalties, but their penalty kill held firm.

After Callas Pierce, Mohan and Dion Schraeder all took penalties within a span of one minute 12 seconds, including a double minor to Mohan, the North Stars had a five-on-three power play that lasted more than two minutes.

However, the Red Wings killed it off to keep the game at 3-2.

In the final minute, Pierce scored an empty-net goal to seal the game and give the Red Wings a Halloween win.

Final score: 4-2 Red Wings, shots 15-6 North Stars, 32-27 North Stars total

With the loss, the North Stars fell to 3-11-1-0 on the year and remain at the bottom of the Nutrien Division.

They’re back in action against the Kindersley Klippers on Friday when they try to take down Kindersley for the first time this season.
