The Saskatchewan Health Authority is reminding residents to have a safe Halloween.

“In our communities, it gets dark early and the weather can be an issue, so a little planning helps keep the night fun, healthy and safe for everyone,” a public release by Dr. Angela Silveira states.

There are a number of tips Silveira recommends following on Halloween such as wearing bright clothes or reflective tape, or carrying a flashlight or face paint to ensure trick-or-treaters are seen. Children should also be accompanied by an adult and older kids should walk together in groups.

People should use sidewalks when available or walk on the left side of the road facing traffic, if not. Also, never go into a house or vehicle unless a parent or guardian has set it up.

Silveira notes trick-or-treaters should avoid unfamiliar dogs, along with wild animals. If someone is biten or scratched, they should wash the wound and seek medical attention.

Don’t forget to check any Halloween candy before consuming. It is advised to throw away anything that is opened, unwrapped, unfamiliar, or homemade by someone unknown. If you have food allergies, read labels carefully and carry a epinephrine auto-injector.

If you are handing out treats, turn your porch light on, clear icy steps and keep any pets inside. If you are driving, slow down, watch for kids, and never drive impaired.

“Let’s work together to make Halloween safe and enjoyable for everyone in our communities,” Silveira added.

Finally, dress for the weather, stay home if you are sick, and wash your hands before eating treats.
