A North Battleford man has returned from the 2026 World Archery Field and 3D Championships among the Top 15 archers in the world.

Jovica Djukic was one of three locals to make the trip for the tournament in Yankton, South Dakota, where he beat out over 200 other competitors to finish the event at 14th overall.

“Everybody has the opportunity to win; it just comes down to consistency and if it’s your day,” he said.

“Overall, I was really happy with my results as an archer and competitor. I met so many archers throughout the world, we made new friendships and seen some friends that we met before … it really feels like an extended family.”

Djukic said rain was one of the biggest challenges during the qualifying rounds.

“It was so slippery on that hill, the rain created pretty muddy conditions that they gave us the chance either to shoot only six targets out of 24 or not shoot at all because it was so dangerous. People were falling and it was pretty treacherous rain, so we as the shooters voted and decided to only shoot six targets instead of not shooting at all.”

In his first field archery match, Djukic faced a German archer and won, qualifying in 14th place among the top 16 competitors. He then faced an archer from France who he lost to, leaving Djukic with a 14th-place overall finish.

The 3D competition presented another set of challenges, with competitors shooting at 24 animal targets throughout the course.

“The first day it was kind of raining a little bit too and courses were pretty challenging,” Djukic explained. “They put some animals quite a distance out, like we shoot up to 30 metres distance-wise.”

Djukic won his first 3D match against a Slovenian athlete, qualifying in 16th place out of 16 competitors. He then faced the competitor from France once more.

“Unfortunately, I had a small mistake on my first target. Then he took commanding lead and kind of kept that lead. So I lost that match and then ended up 14th in 3D.”

Djukic said he is grateful for the financial support he received from the Saskatchewan Archers Association, as well as the local support of the Battle River Archers club throughout the championship.

He is now looking forward to the winter indoor shooting season in the Battlefords while waiting for his next opportunity to compete on the world stage.
