A look at recent high school sports in the Battlefords

With the school year well underway, various high school sports are well into their seasons. 

John Paul II Collegiate: 

Football: 

The Crusaders football team is fourth in its five-team conference with a 1-3 record. Its most recent game was a 28-14 home loss to Delisle. 

The Crusaders’ next game is Oct. 1 in Meadow Lake. 

The last time the teams met, the Crusaders earned a 74-14 home win over the Spartans. 

Volleyball: 

This past weekend, both the junior boys and junior girls Crusaders volleyball teams competed in Melfort. 

The junior girls reached the medal round before falling in the bronze-medal game. 

Meanwhile, the junior boys continued their hot streak, winning gold for the third straight tournament. 

The junior boys have now won gold medals in Lloydminster and Melfort, as well as at their home tournament.

The senior girls volleyball team fell in the semifinals but bounced back to win bronze at its tournament in Kindersley.

The senior boys finished fifth at their home tournament.

Golf: 

The golf provincials were successful for John Paul II, with Shae Maunula shooting a 67 to become provincial champion. 

Shae’s sister, Natalie Maunula, also finished ninth, while Finn Silver was 17th. 

In the team standings, the boys finished fifth and the girls were sixth in the province.

Cross country: 

At their most recent meet in Wilkie, the Crusaders had five medallists. Jessie Phommavong won silver, while William Myburgh, Isabel Shepherd, Xavier Prince and Anne Prince each won bronze in their respective categories. 

The Crusaders have also won four cross-country gold medals this season. 

Phommavong and Cohen Lafreniere finished first in Unity, while Anne Prince and Frank Acaster won gold in Spiritwood.

North Battleford Comprehensive High School: 

Football: 

The NBCHS Vikings football team is 1-1 this season. 

After a 23-7 win over Prince Albert St. Mary, the Vikings fell 28-2 to Prince Albert Carlton on the road. 

The Vikings’ next game is Oct. 1 at home against Lloydminster.
