Work underway on long-awaited Battleford arena expansion

Once winter arrives, crews will move inside to focus on the interior work.

“It won’t disrupt any hockey this year; they have a lot of things they can do,” Leslie said. “Then in the spring, hopefully we can have it close to being done by the opening of hockey season.”

Meanwhile, the Battleford Arena Expansion fundraising committee is working on ways to help raise money for the project.

“A couple of the committee members have been really, really good with bringing some ideas of what they worked with in the past,” said Coun. Kevin Russell. “Another committee member, he works with the First Nations organizations, and he’s inquired with them regarding how to fundraise and what to do; just get some ideas that way.”

Some of the ongoing ideas include a senior alumni game featuring former players, a New Year’s dance and a sportsman dinner. Russell said the committee hopes to promote its fundraising efforts throughout the Battlefords region, as well as to people who previously played or lived in the community.

This week, the Battleford Arena and Alex Dillabough Centre will experience power outages related to construction. The arena will operate as usual using generators, and no residential outages are expected.
