The Turtle River League U18 season has come to an end, and the Unity Cardinals can call themselves champions.

The Cardinals won the championship after taking down the North Battleford Beavers in a two-game sweep of the best-of-three series.

Cardinals player Austin Sittler said the final game was close, but a late rally led them to the win.

“The first four innings were pretty close, then our offense kind of woke up and we pulled away in the fifth. I think we got five or six in the fifth there. It was a good series throughout,” he said.

It was the bottom of the order for the Cardinals that got things going, which player Dom Sieben said helped provide a spark for the rest of the squad.

“When you’re down in the game in the later innings and you have guys at the bottom of the order step up and do something big to set up the guys at the top, it really helps everyone get going,” said Sieben.

“Anyone on our team can bat at any order or any spot in the order any time of the day. Just depends on who’s hot and who’s not. Our bottom of the order got everyone going, and it helped us carry that momentum in the rest of the game to take it home.”

Sieben said the team plays for each other, and having a tight-knit group helped lead them to a championship.

“We know that if one person does something, we’re there to pick them up. One person makes an error, we’re not going to get mad at them or something like that. We’re together as a team and we do it. We win as a team, we lose as a team,” said Sieben.

“Unity minor ball is a very tight knit and like everyone’s there for each other all the time. And I think that’s the most important part of our baseball culture in Unity,” Sieben said.

When asked about any notable plays during the playoff run, both Sieben and Sittler mentioned a nice double play turned by Emerson Cey and Jinks Cooper.

“Kind of got the guys going in the first game. That one sticks out to me,” said Sittler.

Sieben, who was playing first base for the double play, talked about what was going through his mind when the throw was coming toward him to finish it off.

“It was like, holy crap, that was a really nice turn, really nice glove flip. If I screw this up, this is going to hurt me more than it hurts them. So don’t screw it up,” he joked.

After winning the Turtle River League, the Cardinals set their sights on the U18 AA provincials in Moose Jaw from July 24 to 26.
