The latest from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada. All times are Eastern:

6:50 p.m.

Switzerland is through to the World Cup quarterfinals. Ruben Vargas buried the winning penalty to give Switzerland a 4-3 shootout victory over Colombia after 120 scoreless minutes at BC Place. Switzerland will face Argentina on Saturday in Kansas City.

____

6:36 p.m.

We’re going to penalties at BC Place. Colombia and Switzerland remained deadlocked at 0-0 after 120 minutes. Colombia nearly won it in the 115th minute when Jaminton Campaz found himself alone in the box, but with Swiss defenders closing, blasted his shot well over the crossbar.

6:15 p.m.

Halfway through extra time at BC Place, it remains scoreless. The teams are not holding back. Gregor Kobel dived left to get both hands on Jaminton Campaz’s powerful shot in the 101st minute before Camilo Vargas denied substitute Zeki Amdouni three minutes later. The match remains 0-0 heading into the final 15 minutes.

___

5:54 p.m.

Ninety minutes wasn’t enough. Colombia and Switzerland are headed to extra time after playing to a scoreless draw through regulation at BC Place. The winner will face Argentina in Saturday’s World Cup quarterfinal in Kansas City, Mo.

____

5:40 p.m.

Some sports star power at BC Place. Former Canucks goaltender Kirk McLean and Olympic skeleton champion Jon Montgomery helped introduce Canadian rocker Tom Cochrane at halftime. NBA star Jimmy Butler, of the Golden State Warriors, was also shown on the big screen watching the match from a VIP box. Butler has been following the Colombian side during the tournament.

___

5:24 p.m.

Colombia wastes a golden opportunity in the 63rd minute. Luis Suárez found himself wide open in scoring range but blasted his shot well wide of the right post.

___

5:12 p.m.

Switzerland came close to scoring in the 53rd minute. Fabian Rieder’s curling free kick struck the outside of the net, but it remains scoreless at BC Place.

___

5:09 p.m.

Switzerland should have the lead. Substitute Djibril Sow found himself with a glorious chance just two minutes into the second half, but fired his shot wide of the net from close range.

___

4:57 p.m.

Fans at BC Place are getting a halftime surprise as Canadian rocker Tom Cochrane performs his hit “Life is a Highway.”

____

4:50 p.m.

Scoreless at halftime at BC Place. The atmosphere has been electric, but the opening 45 minutes were relatively low-event despite the fast pace. Colombia has a 5-2 advantage in shots, although Switzerland holds a 2-1 edge in shots on target. Colombia had 45 per cent possession to Switzerland’s 43 per cent.

___

4:29 p.m.

We have a goalkeepers’ duel at BC Place. After Gregor Kobel denied Colombia earlier, Camilo Vargas answered at the other end in the 30th minute, stopping Fabian Rieder after the Swiss midfielder created space with his speed. Still scoreless.

___

4:24 p.m.

What a save. Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel dove full stretch to his left to deny Gustavo Puerta in the 21st minute, preserving a scoreless match with the save of the game so far.

___

4 p.m.

Game on at BC Place. Colombia and Switzerland are underway in their World Cup round-of-16 match. The winner advances to face Argentina in the quarterfinals Saturday in Kansas City, Missouri. BC Place has been taken over by Colombia supporters. The full-throated rendition of the Colombian national anthem, “Himno Nacional de la República de Colombia,” reached a decibel level unlike anything heard through the first six World Cup matches in Vancouver, and the crowd has carried that energy into kickoff.

___

3:50 p.m.

BC Place has been painted amarillo canario (canary yellow). Roughly 90 per cent of the crowd appears to be backing Colombia. On television, you could easily mistake this for a home match in Bogota. The Swiss supporters are concentrated in one section of the 400 level, with only scattered pockets of red elsewhere in the stadium.

___

3:35 p.m.

Switzerland will be without Johan Manzambi, Michel Aebischer and Luca Jaquez for today’s World Cup round-of-16 match against Colombia. The 20-year-old Manzambi, one of the tournament’s breakout stars, is out with a knee injury suffered in training and arrived at BC Place wearing a brace. Manzambi scored three goals and added two assists in Switzerland’s first four World Cup matches.

__

3:15 p.m.

Colombia fans inside BC Place cheered as the team took the field for warmups. The supporters then booed as Switzerland’s players came out of the tunnel. Yellow Colombia jerseys greatly outnumbered the Swiss red inside the stadium.

3:05 p.m.

World Cup volunteers in Vancouver are reflecting on today’s last match at BC Place. Javiera Uribe, directing people outside the stadium, says she’s sad her home city’s role in the tournament is coming to an end “but obviously nothing lasts forever.” Fellow volunteer Fahim Mahfuz has been in BC Place for all seven of its matches and says he had the “surreal experience” of an Australian player kicking a ball to him ahead of their match against Turkey. The Vancouver resident says each match was a different experience.

2:08 p.m.

Defending champion Argentina stormed back from a 2-0 deficit and advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals with a 3-2 win over Egypt. Enzo Fernandez scored the winner in added time after Lionel Messi tied the game with his tournament-leading eighth goal. Argentina will next face the winner of tonight’s game between Switzerland and Colombia in Vancouver.

12:55 p.m.

Defending champion Argentina trails Egypt 1-0 at halftime of their FIFA World Cup round-of-16 match in Atlanta. Yasser Ibrahim scored in the 15th minute to put Egypt ahead. Argentina had more of the ball, with 53 per cent possession, and outshot Egypt 7-2 in the first half. Argentina put three attempts on target, while Egypt scored on its lone shot on goal.

___

12:01 p.m.

Today’s World Cup action is underway in Atlanta, with defending champion Argentina facing Egypt in a round of 16 game. The winner faces Switzerland or Colombia in the quarterfinals. Argentina star Lionel Messi enters the contest with seven goals, which is tied for the tournament lead with France’s Kylian Mbappé and Norway’s Erling Haaland.

11:50 a.m.

Colombian fans in yellow are vastly outnumbering Swiss fans in the BC Place Stadium precinct, ahead of today’s match. Thousands of Colombian fans have gathered outside their team’s hotel in downtown Vancouver ahead of the round-of16 showdown. Swiss supporters have made Vancouver their de facto home base, with their team playing their third consecutive match in the city.

11 a.m.

Julian Alvarez returns to Argentina’s starting lineup for its World Cup round-of-16 match against Egypt, which gets underway in one hour in Atlanta. Lionel Scaloni also brings Nicolas Tagliafico and Leandro Paredes into the defending champions’ lineup, while Egypt benches Omar Marmoush and starts Haissem Hassan. Argentina is chasing a second straight World Cup title, while Egypt is playing in the round of 16 for the first time.

___

9:10 a.m.

Canada’s role in the 2026 World Cup comes to an end today as Vancouver’s BC Place hosts a match between Switzerland and Colombia. Switzerland advanced by winning its group before eliminating Algeria, while Colombia is chasing its first World Cup quarterfinal since 2014 after edging Ghana in the round of 32. The day’s other knockout match has Lionel Messi and defending champion Argentina facing Mohamed Salah and Egypt in Atlanta. The winners will meet Saturday in Kansas City.

9 a.m.

French prosecutors have opened an investigation after a Paraguayan senator racially abused Kylian Mbappé following France’s World Cup win over Paraguay. The Paris prosecutor’s office says the probe was launched after France’s soccer federation filed a complaint over Celeste Amarilla’s posts on X. Mbappé called Amarilla a “despicable woman,” while the Paraguayan government condemned her comments and said they do not represent the country or its people.
