Heavy rain digs deeper into North Battleford’s pothole problem

Recent heavy rain is taking a toll on North Battleford’s streets, creating new potholes and worsening existing ones.

According to Canada Weather Stats, the city received a combined 60.5 millimetres of precipitation during a multi-day rain event late last week, including 45.5 millimetres on June 27 and another 15 millimetres on June 29.

The damage is occurring “particularly in areas where water has entered cracks in the road surface,” Stewart Schafer, the City’s director of operations, said in a statement.

The City’s Roadways Department is inspecting and filling potholes, with repairs prioritized based on road condition, traffic volume and safety concerns.

Vehicles driving over potholes can also cause further damage to the crumbling pavement, making them bigger or deeper.

Drivers are being asked to slow down, use caution and avoid accumulated water on streets when possible. The city also said splashing pedestrians could result in a $100 fine.

Residents can report potholes by submitting an online service request through the city’s website or calling 306-445-1700. The city asked people to provide clear details about the location and size of the pothole to help speed up repairs.

Last year alone, city crews filled nearly 9,000 potholes and used about 800 tonnes of asphalt.

This season, the city is continuing road work through its Underground Pipe and Asphalt Replacement program, with surface rehabilitation planned on several roads and carryover work in Parsons Industrial Park.

City council awarded the spring and summer paving contract to K & S Asphalt Services Ltd. for $3.17 million. The work, budgeted at about $3.8 million, was expected to run from May through August.

Residents near the paving areas were to receive letters in April with maps, estimated construction dates and information about temporary changes to street parking.
