FIFA’s high-tech soccer ball played a key role in sorting out the chaotic end of Portugal’s 2-1 win over Croatia last night in Toronto. The balls at the World Cup are fitted with what is called “connected ball technology,” which uses sensors that can detect touches that referees or replays might miss. It cancelled Croatia’s late equalizer deep in added time when it found Croatia’s Igor Mantanovic got the slightest of glances with his head, meaning Mario Palasic was in an offside position during the buildup to the goal.
