TURTLE RIVER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

Battlefords U18 Beavers preparing for Turtle River League finals against Unity

As the baseball season approaches its final weeks, one of the U18 Battlefords Beavers baseball teams will be competing for the Turtle River League championship when they face the Unity Cardinals in a best-of-three series.

After finishing the regular season with a 9-5 record and placing third in the league, the Beavers took down Lashburn in a one-game semifinal.

They had previously lost 12-2 to Lashburn during the season, so there was some doubt, but head coach Travis Florence said they had a hot start to the game, which led to a blowout victory.

“The hitting was phenomenal in that game. It was like right off the bat first inning,” he said.

“Our leadoff hitter hit a home run. The second batter hit a ground rule double. We went on to get five runs in that first inning, and there was no looking back from there.”

The team played in a pair of tournaments this season in Saskatoon and Macklin. While Florence said they didn’t succeed in those tournaments, he said they developed and improved a lot as a team.

When asked what stands out most about his squad, Florence said it is the team’s mentality.

“The team has really got good character, and everybody really likes each other a lot and they really bonded well,” said Florence.

“We end up losing two or three in a row. Nobody ever got down on each other. A lot of fun was had no matter what the situation. They’re always having fun, winning or losing.”

Heading into the final, Florence knows the series will be tough, but also knows his team has a real shot at winning the championship.

“We’ve played Unity twice and we were 1-1. So, they were both close games and really good games. Unity’s got a really good baseball program, as they always have for a long time,” he said.

“They’ll be a strong team to match up against in the league finals. We’ll see how we do. I think we’ve got a chance to win it for sure. It’s also no matter what, going to help us grow and develop as a team, because we also have provincials coming up down the road as well.”

While the dates aren’t official, the final series is expected to run from July 7 to 9 before the provincial tournament in Martensville later in July.

July 7 in Unity.

July 8 in North Battleford.

July 9 in Unity (if necessary)
