Battleford Arena Wall of Fame seeking second class of inductees

Nominations remain open for the second class of the Battleford Arena Wall of Fame, with the Town of Battleford encouraging residents to recognize athletes, teams and builders who have helped shape local ice sports.

The Wall of Fame honours contributions to hockey and figure skating by those with a strong connection to Battleford and the greater Battlefords area.

Jordan Schechtel, the Town of Battleford’s manager of parks and recreation, said the program is in its second year after six people were inducted into the inaugural class.

Going forward, the town will accept a maximum of four inductees each year across three categories: athlete, team and builder.

“So far, we’ve only had a couple of applications this year, so that’s why we’re looking to get the word out,” Schechtel said. “I know it’s the start of summer. People are busy. We just want to make sure people are aware of it.”

Athlete nominees must have achieved a high level of excellence in their sport, while team nominees should have represented the community with distinction.

The builder category includes coaches, officials, longtime volunteers, sponsors, administrators and media members who have made significant contributions over an extended period.

“We’d like the athlete, team or builder to have a strong tie to Battleford, but recognizing that Battleford’s minor sports are highly intertwined, it’s broader to include the Battlefords,” he said.

Nomination forms are available on the Town of Battleford website or in person at the Alex Dillabough Centre until June 30.

“Don’t be hesitant if you think there’s somebody or a team that’s worthy of induction. Definitely get the nomination in,” Schechtel said.

An induction ceremony has not yet been scheduled as the town continues to collect nominations.
