"IT'S PROOF OF MY IMPROVEMENT"

For 17-year-old Flight Sgt. Matthew Kim, receiving two of the highest honours at the 43 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron’s 85th annual ceremonial review reflects years of hard work.

Kim received the Top Overall Cadet Trophy, awarded to a cadet who demonstrates consistent excellence, including work ethic and attitude within the program. He also received the Lord Strathcona Medal, the highest award a cadet can earn, recognizing performance in physical training and overall excellence.

“I try my best, and I try to learn. I try to use what I have, and I hope to get those awards because it’s going to help for my future,” Kim said. “It’s proof of my improvement.”

Kim has been involved with the program for four years after moving to Canada from South Korea.

“I was really interested in aviation since I was really young… I wanted to become a pilot. I moved to Canada five years ago and then I found out about Royal Military College and I wanted to be an officer in the military, then either pilot or an air combat engineer, so something related to aviation,” he explained.

That interest led him to join the Air Cadets program in North Battleford.

“I was like waiting for Wednesdays to come here and learn new things and teach and do drills as a whole group. So that kind of stuff really is something what I wanted to do, even in my future.”

Kim will transfer to the Edmonton squadron for his final year before pursuing plans to attend the Royal Military College, earn an engineering degree and enter the airmen selection process.
