Yorkton Terriers force game seven with a 6-3 win over the North Stars

The Battlefords North Stars will play in their first game seven since the 2019 season after the Yorkton Terriers took down the North Stars 6-3 in game six. Tylan Henrikson had a pair of goals in the win and now has three goals in his last two contests. 

Henrikson opened the scoring at the 3:52 mark of the first period when he was initially denied by Kaeden Serpa but gathered the puck back before turning and scoring past Serpa from the right side of the slot to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead. 

Alessio Nardelli tied things up for the North Stars on the power play at 11:44, gathering the puck in the high slot and shooting it through Callum Creig’s five hole to knot the game up at one. 

After one: Tied 1-1 

Just 2:40 into the second period, Linken Fisher gave the North Stars the lead, shooting the puck off the elbow of the net and in for the North Stars second power play goal of the game. Fisher’s third of the playoffs made it 2-1 North Stars. 

Nardelli doubled down to five the North Stars a 3-1 lead, scoring five hole again at the the 6:23 mark. Nardelli’s eighth goal in the playoffs puts him at a tie with Red Wings forward Josh Sale atop the league. 

After the North Stars went up 3-1, a switch flipped for the rest of the game. 

The Terriers responded just 16 seconds later. At 6:39 Drew Heil scored top shelf from the high slot to cut the lead to 3-2 the very next shift. 

Just over halfway through the period, Yorkton tied things up. A scramble in front of the net ended with the puck making its way behind Serpa and Vinay Junek swatted in his fourth goal of the playoffs to even it up. 

The Terriers continued to heavily outplay the North Stars, but the game remained tied for the remainder of the period. 

After two: Tied 3-3 

Jye Zawatsky gave the Terriers the lead at the 7:18 mark of the third period. A broken play in the neutral zone resulted in a two-on-one for the Terriers. Gabriel Courchesne found Zawatsky who fired it past Serpa to give the Terriers the 4-3 lead. 

Courchesne added a goal of his own to make it 5-3 at 13:42, before Henrikson scored his second of the game at 18:52 to put a stamp on the victory. 

Final score: 6-3 Terriers 

Series: Tied 3-3 

On top of scoring five unanswered goals, the Terriers outshot the North Stars 21-1 in the third period. “They really took control for that last half,” said North Stars assistant coach Owen Lamb postgame. 

The North Stars and Terriers head back to Yorkton for game seven on April 13 after the North Stars disappointing performance. 

“Excited to see the response from our guys. We got a lot of games and I’m sure they’ll show up on Wednesday,” said Lamb. 

With the Weyburn Red Wings/Flin Flon Bombers series also going seven games, it’s the first time since the 2004-2005 season that both semifinals’ series go the distance.
