"GROW TOGETHER"

Land deal strengthens ties between Battleford and Poundmaker Cree Nation

Mar 19, 2026 | 4:33 PM

A recent land purchase near the town of Battleford is being welcomed as a positive step for the community.

Poundmaker Cree Nation’s recent purchase of farmland located on the south corridor of Battle River comes as exciting news for Mayor Ames Leslie.

“Anytime we can have a new partner willing to invest in the town of Battleford and purchase land for future developments, it’s a good day. When it’s one of our neighboring Indigenous communities who are looking to expand, it’s even better,” he said.

Leslie added that this purchase is part of an ongoing relationship with the First Nation.

“The town of Battleford already provides safe, fresh drinking water to Poundmaker’s subdivision. The town and Poundmaker have worked together in the past to help develop each other’s community. This is just one more step in that direction for us to grow together.”

There are currently no plans proposed for the use of this land.

BattlefordsNOW reached out to Poundmaker Cree Nation for comment and did not hear back.
