Klippenstein scores winner, North Stars beat Millionaires 2-1 in overtime

The Battlefords North Stars (12-6-2-2, 2nd in Nutrien Division) got back in the win column with a 2-1 overtime win vs the Melville Millionaires (11-11-2-2, 3rd in Bunge Division). After losing a five game goal streak in Friday’s game, Finlay Klippenstein netted the overtime winner.

Millionaires captain Boston Harkness opened the scoring with 30 seconds left in the first period when he grabbed the puck on a scramble in front and put it over a sprawling Kaeden Serpa to give the Millionaires a 1-0 lead.

After going 0-4 on the powerplay in their last game, the North Stars capitalized on the man advantage in the second period. North Stars captain Anthony Campbell took a pass from Alessio Nardelli and scored a one-timer to make it 1-1 with his second goal in as many games.

North Stars assistant coach credited the powerplay to having more of a shooting mentality. “We’re not going to pass the puck in the net, like Connor [Logan] likes to say. Just really focusing on getting shots through, moving pucks high when they get a little bit aggressive, just taking what they gave us.”

Later on in the period, Campbell was forced to leave the game with a lower-body injury.

Both teams were held scoreless in the third period, and the game went overtime tied at one. In the overtime period, the Millionaires had a 2-on-1. Louis Nadeau slid the puck over to Preston Baerwald, and Baerwald stopped by Serpa sliding across the crease to make the save.

Later on, Josh Knittig found Klippenstein in the offensive zone, who fired it past Noah Sinagowitz to give the North Stars the 2-1 win. The game winner was Klippenstein’s 10th goal of the season and ninth in nine games.

“He’s just been so clutch for us. Of course it had to be him, and he ended up pulling off the game for us,” said Lamb on Klippenstein after the game.

With the win combined with a Humboldt Broncos 5-3 loss to the Bruins, the North Stars jumped ahead of the Broncos in the standings to second place in the Nutrien Division and sixth in the league.

The North Stars have a heavy weekend coming up, hosting the Estevan Bruins on Dec. 5 before heading to Weyburn for games on Dec 6-7.
