Clean sweep at District’s for Vikings Junior teams

The Battle West Junior Basketball Districts were held this past weekend and it was a great showing for the North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) Vikings as both teams won gold in the 2A division.

For the Juniors Boys, they got a bye in the first round and headed to straight to the finals where they took on the John Paul II Collegiate Crusaders, who beat Unity in the semi-finals to advance.

Coming into the game, the Vikings and Crusaders had already played each other two times this season with both games going to the Vikings and this success continued into the final.

The Vikings ended up taking the game with a final score of 70-23 and Head Coach Jeff Gibson said that the biggest factor in the team’s success was defence.

“We were really defensive this year, anytime anyone would ever say something complimentary about our group, it was defence. Kevin Pinno, our assistant coach and I worked hard with our group to work on defence most practices and really implement the intensity,” said Gibson.

Apart from winning District’s, the Jr. Boys Viking team also only lost one game all season and Gibson, who is in his final year of coaching the team, said it was a great way to end things.

“We are super proud of the boys, it’s been it’s been an amazing journey, but I am just super happy for our boys this year. It feels good to have this be the way out at the end of my career,” he said.

For the NBCHS Jr. Girls, they saw a similar path as they also got a bye to go straight to the championship game and ended up beating JPII as well to take home first place. The girls finished off their season going 14-3 with three tournament wins.

Unity ended up getting bronze for both the boys and girls.

1A Division

In the 1A Division, it was another sweep as host team, Kerrobert won the championship with both their boys and girls teams.

For the Jr. Boys final, Kerrobert won against the Hafford Vikings to take the gold, giving Hafford silver and Macklin bronze.

Then for the Jr. Girls, Kerrobert beat Macklin to win the championship.
