GIVING BACK

‘A very caring community’ : Battlefords food bank receives over $10K from 100 Women Who Care

1,200 community members benefited from The Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre(BDFRC) ’s Chrismas Hamper program last year, which marks the significance of the $11,000 donation 100 Women The Battlefords made to them on Thursday night.

100 Women recently hosted its third 100 Women Who Care gathering at Stil Boutique and Beauty Inc. in North Battleford. The gathering brought together local charities and its members, providing an opportunity to network and foster greater community growth.

Kayla Petersen, a committee member of The 100 Women, noted that the total donation came from over 90 registered attendees, each contributing at least $100, along with donations from those unable to attend.

“It’s still important to recognize that these charities and these organizations in our community do a lot of really good work, and they still need help. It is important to give back and support our community members,” Petersen said.

Petersen pointed out that choosing a charity was difficult as she believes they all deserving. To help make the decision, each organization gave a five-minute presentation highlighting their missions and accomplishments. This was followed by a vote to determine which charity resonated the most with the audience.

Erin Katerynych, executive director of BDFRC and the winner of the night, believes these donations will help them a lot with this year’s Christmas Hamper Program. During the holiday season, BDFRC distributes hampers to residents to exchange with hams, turkeys, and toys to warm the community in the biting cold. This year, they plan to distribute 450 hampers.

“It keeps us really busy to do this on top of what we’re already doing, so this is an amazing donation from the 100 Women Who Care because last year, our Christmas hamper was over $50,000, which really helps out a lot,” Katerynych said.

Katerynych also expressed her gratitude for being chosen, pointing out that the other two candidates also deserve recognition and support.

This is the third event of the year, the group held its first event in February at Home Hardware North Battleford and awarded $10,500 to the humane society. The second one was in June when The Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre won $10,000.

“I’ve said many times, the Battlefords, in my opinion, is a very caring community and there are many people here who are always willing to step up,” Katerynych said.
