$5.9 million revenue in latest Battleford financial report

Aug 21, 2024 | 4:14 PM

The Town of Battlefords has seen a $5.9 million revenue in its recent financial reports.

In the recent town council meeting, Financial Manager Tetiana Polishchuk updated the council on the latest Year-To-Date (YTD) financial report ending June 30.

According to Polishchuk, the revenue is 61 per cent of the town’s forecast. She noted that only $3.1 million was spent, which is 46 per cent of what they expected.

“To have only 46 per cent of our yearly expenses at the halfway mark is a good, good pace,” Mayor Ames Leslie said.

Polishchuk said expenses in general government service are higher than in 2023. Planning and development services expenses were lower in 2024 as of the second quarter due to the planner position going unfilled.

“We now hired the Northbound Planning Company, so we will have some more expenses at the end of the year,” she said.

Leslie pointed out transportation expenses are higher during the last part of the year due to the increased demand for snow removal.

Leslie explained that besides the extra work to better the arena and water sprinkler systems, the price they saw from the council approval was slightly overrun.

“We’re probably only 46 per cent of our yearly expected expenses, so that is a great job by our team,” he said.

He stated the importance of people understanding that the town can only spend more on street pavement and overall maintenance by reducing expenses and finding savings within the organization.

Taxes are intended to cover operational costs, not for future infrastructure. He explained that if they can maintain this pace of reducing expenses, they can allocate more funds to build additional parks, streets, and city walks next year.

“Taxes can only cover so much,” he said.

The town council meeting was held on Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Battleford Town Hall.
