Drowning Prevention

National Drowning Prevention Week runs July 21 to 27 in Battlefords

Jul 17, 2024 | 2:40 PM

As drownings have become a tragic feature this summer with at least five so far in the region, the Battlefords have proclaimed next week National Drowning Prevention Week from July 21 to 27.

The City and Town councils issued proclamations this week to educate the public about water safety and help save lives. In a letter of request to Battlefords Mayor Ames Leslie from The Lifesaving Society Canada, it noted “drowning is the number one cause of unintentional death among children one to four years of age.”

The letter stated while 500 people died annually and is the third leading cause of “unintentional death” in those 60 and under, Saskatchewan sees an average of 18 drownings a year.

To help encourage water safety, there are some activities coming up at the Battlefords Co-Op Aquatic Centre people can register for including a Water Safety Camp on Monday, July 22, a Swim to Survive Challenge on Tuesday, July 23 and on Friday, July 26, there will be free swimming lessons.

In a proclamation address video, Mayor David Gillan read out the official wording from the Lifesaving Society.

“Most drownings are preventable in a Water Smart community,” he said in part.

“Only through Water Smart education and a healthy respect for the potential danger that any body of water may present can we truly enjoy the beauty and recreation opportunities offered by these bodies of water.”
