Jul 5, 2024 | 10:38 AM

UPDATE: On July 5 at approximately 5:00 p.m., the canoer that went missing on Helene Lake was located deceased by Saskatchewan RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team in the water near the area where he was last seen.

His family has been notified. Unity RCMP and Glaslyn Fire and Rescue assisted with the investigation.

Turtleford and Glaslyn RCMP are advising residents around the Helene Lake area of an increased first response presence as the search continues for a missing canoer.

Police say they received the call about the missing canoer at around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Investigation determined that a canoe had tipped near the boat launch on Helene Lake and that one of the occupants, a teenaged boy, did not resurface.

Since receiving the report, RCMP have been searching for the boy with the assistance of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Remotely Piloted Aircraft System and Underwater Recovery Team. Local fire and emergency medical services are also helping in the search.

Police are asking anyone in the area who may have information on the incident or who may have noticed anything that seems out of place in or around the lake to contact Turtleford or Glaslyn RCMP by dialing 310-RCMP (7267).
