Work has begun on the construction of a new second-stage fourplex in Meadow Lake that will house women and children affected by interpersonal violence.

Second stage housing provides safe, affordable, longer-term support for those trying to break the cycle of violence and rebuild their lives. In addition to the housing, clients can get counselling and help finding employment or education programs for their kids.

The MLA for Meadow Lake Jeremy Harrison, joined representatives from Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC) Friday morning to announce the construction and investments. The Canada-Saskatchewan Bi-lateral Agreement under the National Housing Strategy will provide $877,821 while the MLTC will contribute $300,000.

The new fourplex will include four three-bedroom affordable rental units. Three of them will be rented to families. The other unit will be rented out by the room. The MLTC and other community-based organizations will provide support services to the residents. It’s hoped the new second-stage units will make way for new admissions to the Waskoosis Safe Shelter in Meadow Lake also operated by MLTC.
