Case now moving to trial for accused in Cope death

May 6, 2024 | 12:00 PM

The accused charged in the death of Gregory Cope will be heading to trial at the Court of King’s Bench in Battleford.

Travis Jean, 34, is charged with first-degree murder and arson with disregard for human life.

Jean’s one-week preliminary hearing was held in North Battleford Provincial Court last month with the court determining sufficient evidence to proceed to trial.

The date for Jean’s trial is still to be set and he is scheduled for a private case management conference on May 10.

Police said that Cope, 32, was found deceased inside a home on 27th Street West in Battleford that was destroyed by fire on Feb. 18, 2023. Investigators found human remains inside the home less than 10 days later.

Initial investigation determined that Cope died as a result of a homicide. The Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes has been investigating the death.
