Preliminary hearing for accused in Cope death to start this week

A man charged in the death of Gregory Cope will return to court for a preliminary hearing running Tuesday to Friday this week.

Travis Jean, 34, is charged with first-degree murder and arson – disregard for human life. Jean is scheduled to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on April 16 for the start of the hearing.

Police reported March 3, 2023, that Cope, 32, was found deceased inside a home on 27 Street West in Battleford that was destroyed by fire Feb. 18 of that year. Investigators found human remains inside the home Feb. 27, 2023.

With help from the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, the victim was identified as Gregory Cope. Initial investigation determined Cope died as a result of a homicide. The Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes has been investigating.
