Teacher strike

Teacher job action escalates next week in Sask.

Mar 8, 2024 | 11:09 AM

The latest round of job sanctions will hit Saskatchewan schools next week.

Teachers across Saskatchewan will not be volunteering their time for extracurricular activities between March 11 and 13 and will also withdraw noon-hour supervision on March 11.

The action is the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation’s (STF) latest move to pressure the province into putting class size and complexity into the provincial collective agreement.

“While this week’s funding announcement is welcome, it does not guarantee ongoing, predictable and sustainable funding for education,” said STF president Samantha Becotte in a media release.

“We have said on many occasions that a new collective agreement is within reach; government simply has to come to the bargaining table with a mandate to negotiate class size and complexity.”

The STF said they want the funding in the contract so it remains in place and the province can’t opt to end it after a period of time.

The withdrawal of services means teachers will not supervise athletics, non-curricular arts, field trips, travel, graduation preparations, clubs or other activities.

In some school divisions, removing the noon-hour supervision means a shorter school day.

Withdrawal of noon-hour supervision will involve teachers who are members of the following local associations:

• Creighton Teachers’ Association – All schools in Creighton School Division

• Holy Trinity Teachers’ Association – All schools in Holy Trinity Catholic School Division

• Horizon Teachers’ Association – All schools in Horizon School Division

• Lloydminster Teachers’ Association – All schools in Lloydminster Public and Lloydminster Catholic school divisions

• North West Teachers’ Association – All schools in Northwest School Division

• Prairie South Teachers’ Association – All schools in Prairie South School Division

• Prairie Valley Teachers’ Association – All schools in Prairie Valley School Division

• Prince Albert and Area Teachers’ Association – All schools in Saskatchewan Rivers and Prince Albert Catholic school divisions

On Wednesday, Premier Scott Moe announced the education portion of the provincial budget with an additional $45 million for classroom supports.
