Battlefords Humane Society busy this winter

Jan 11, 2024 | 8:00 AM

The Battlefords Humane Society has been quite active to start the year off as the shelter has seen a large intake of furry animals this winter. The shelter is now at the brink of capacity.

With help from foster homes, Lakeland Veterinary and Saskatoon’s Cat Café to keep their animals, the Humane Society has seen plenty of animals dropped off at the shelter.

“We have close to 200 animals in our care right now,” Battlefords Humane Society Treasurer Laurel Frank said. “We’re low on room, we’re very low.”

The number of animals received is unprecedented for the shelter as this year’s intake blows away what the shelter had planned for this year.

“These numbers are higher than what we have seen in the last few years,” Frank said. “This is quite high for us. More than expected.”

Colder temperatures looming

With temperatures expected to drop below -30 C later this week, many pet owners, along with the Humane Society are worried about keeping their pets as warm as possible.

“We’re quite worried about this cold snap, especially given how full we are,” Frank said. “If people have room for animals that they are finding that are stray, and if they can keep them anywhere warm and look after them and put up notices, that would help enormously.”

Frank also recommends making sure your animals are spayed/neutered, putting up/reporting missing animals on Facebook, and checking in with the shelter if your animal is missing so the shelter doesn’t hang onto an animal while space is lacking.

The Humane Society is looking for help from anyone as many people are unaware what to do if they do come across a stray animal.

“If people can help out and do find animals, if they can keep them in some way and advertise them on their own or let us know,” Frank said. “Yes, bring them here and we’ll do our best to keep them and find them homes, and get them adopted. But we are very, very full, and we’re getting limited as to how much more we can take.”

The Humane Society is looking forward to finding homes for all 200+ animals this year, and are asking the public to please keep contact them if you do find a stray animal.
