Holm looks to a safer, happier community in 2024

This new year, Fire Chief Lindsay Holm is looking ahead to making the Battlefords a safer, happier community.

Earlier this fall, the City of North Battleford passed protective services and back-alley curfew bylaws and Holm hopes they will bear out.

“I am excited about both those bylaws, I think they should have some significant effects within the community and so that’s one of the things I’m looking forward to,” he said.

“We also have a community safety and wellbeing plan that we’ve been working on for just about the entirety of 2023, so I’m hoping that that is going to be coming out in 2024.”

Holm, who is also the Director of Protective Services, said he’s hoping the new plans will offer new and interesting ideas for looking at how to create a happier place to live. The new year is not without its challenges, however, and the fire chief and director said one of the main focuses will be on social issues.

“Not everything that we deal with is what I say would be a city issue and I think part of it is establishing relationships and working with other community groups and stakeholders,” he said.

“I think that’s something that looking back on 2023, we put a lot of time and effort into starting to develop those relationships and trying to work towards a common goal, which is making North Battleford safer.”

The partnerships are between the city, community safety officers, the First Nations communities and others.

“We’re really trying to be inclusive as possible to ensure that every group has the ability to have a seat at our table and tell us about the issues that are affecting them and our community as a whole,” added Holm.
