AAA Stars roll into weekend looking to stay hot in Tisdale

Dec 2, 2023 | 8:00 AM

Heading into back-to-back games Saturday and Sunday on the road in Tisdale, the Battlefords AAA Stars enter the weekend series red-hot.

Following a bit of a middling first two months of the season that saw the team post a slightly below .500 record at 6-8-1, the Stars appear to have found their groove of late.

The team has a 7-4-0 start to November, punctuated by their recent three-game winning streak which included back-to-back victories over the Trojans, 6-5 and 4-1 last weekend, followed by a clutch 2-1 win over the Saskatoon Contacts Tuesday night.

First-year captain of the Stars Dayne Henry said the team can attribute their recent success to the players’ buy-in as a group to the team system.

“We’ve really come together this last little bit, and we’ve really been able to move the puck well and get into the coach’s systems,” Henry said. “I feel like at the start of the season it took some time, but now we’re really getting into a groove and we’re using our heads a lot better as the season’s gone along.”

In addition to the offensive output, with 12 goals over their last three games, the Stars’ commitment to team defense has also helped them limit the goals against. They have allowed just a single goal against over each of their last two, as Nicholas Grunerud stopped 17 of 18 against Tisdale, followed by a 34 of 35 save performance by Brady Carr against Saskatoon.

Carr spoke to the confidence the recent stretch has given the team with a chance to build on what they have going, heading into a big weekend ahead.

“We just can’t sit on our heels anymore, we know we’ve got this three-game heater going and we know we’ve got to take it to them,” Carr said. “If we trust the process and play with character we’re going to win, and from all that, the results will come.”

Second-year vet and assistant captain Ryder Ellis added that heading into their weekend the team needs to continue to play to their strengths, using their speed and forecheck to set the tone.

“Our coach was just telling us we’re a really fast group and – while we’re pretty small this year – we’re still physical,” Ellis said. “We have some smaller guys too who can lay the body so that’s been good and we just need to continue to get pucks deep, run [the opposition] into the wall and we’ll pick up a couple more wins.”

Saturday’s game will be a 7:30 p.m. puck drop in Tisdale, with Sunday seeing a 2 p.m. start.
