It’s official.

North Battleford resident Tom Kroczynski has been proclaimed the NDP candidate for The Battlefords in the provincial election in 2024.

With no contenders vying for the spot, Kroczynski was acclaimed at the nomination meeting held at the Chapel Gallery Friday.

Kroczynski who teaches Music and French at Bready Elementary School hopes he can make a difference and decided to run for the local candidacy for the NDP party.

“As a teacher, I’m feeling frustrated by the way the government has been conducting themselves through the latest contract negotiations, but also about their gradual underfunding of Education over the last 10 years,” he said. “For myself, this is what I deal with every day, with my colleagues, everywhere we look in schools in Education across the city and across the province people are suffering, teachers are suffering, kids are suffering, families are suffering, and I don’t think this government is aware of that. How do I know they are not aware of that, because they are not doing anything about it. They are pursuing other policies that aren’t addressing any of the real issues facing families, parents, kids and teachers.”

Kroczynski has previously taught at North Battleford Comprehensive High School, St. Mary School and Battleford Central School. In total he has been teaching for more than 20 years.

“Student needs are rising. I can see it in the schools, the administrators are juggling a limited amount of money to try to make the most of it,” he said.

Robert Feist, on the Battlefords NDP constituency executive, said there was a record big turnout for the nomination meeting, which was exciting to see.

Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck also spoke at the meeting.

“Thank you to the people of the Battlefords for choosing such a thoughtful and well thought of candidate,” she said of Kroczynski. “It’s going to be a pleasure working with him in the upcoming months.”

Beck said the current Sask Party government is failing people on many fronts. She said too many people in the province are falling further behind due to pressures from a high cost of living. She added that healthcare workers are experiencing burn out, and looking for a government they can work with.

“They [the current government] don’t want to find solutions, solutions we can find if we work together,” Beck said.
