Vote to end strike involving City of P.A. inside workers halted

Sep 29, 2023 | 8:18 PM

The strike involving inside workers for the City of Prince Albert is looking like it’s going to continue.

Members were set to vote on Friday after CUPE 882 and the city had reached an agreement, however, it was halted with any ballots already cast being destroyed.

According to Mira Lewis, a national representative of CUPE National, the local union was told earlier in the day by the city’s negotiation team that there would be a number of technological, structural, and organizational changes moving forward.

“None of the proposed changes had been disclosed to the union prior to today. We cannot in good faith have our members carry out the vote knowing that the employer withheld vital information,” said Lewis in a statement.

The union is now asking the city to return to the negotiating table. They’re also hoping to have Kristin Anderson, the executive director of labour relations and mediation with the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety, once again take part in the negotiations until another agreement is met.

paNOW has reached out to the City of Prince Albert for comment.
