Former SLGA store to be used for more space and training for Battlefords RCMP

The North Battleford RCMP will soon have additional space in the community.

Members of the police force and the provincial government were in North Battleford on Thursday to announce the former SLGA store on 101^st Street will be repurposed for the RCMP.

Earlier this year, all of Saskatchewan’s SLGA retail spaces were put up for auction after the province announced it would close those locations and exit out of the liquor retail business.

The North Battleford store was one of four buildings earmarked to be refurbished for other government organizations.

“I am very pleased that we were able to identify an alternate use for this property that will support the RCMP’s ability to serve the Battlefords and surrounding area for years to come,” Education Minister and The Battlefords MLA Jeremy Cockrill said. “Policing is a vital component of building safer, stronger communities and today’s announcement enables us to help support local RCMP in their need for additional space.”

Inspector Jesse Gibert of the Battlefords RCMP was on hand for the announcement along with Cockrill and Premier Scott Moe and representatives from the City of North Battleford.

Gilbert said the new building is great news for the detachment as it will soon house the Crime Reduction Team, which has been instrumental in tackling gangs and violent incidents in the city. He added it will also serve as a central hub for training.

“Officers and employees from the North won’t have to travel as far for courses – helping to ensure we’re being the most effective and efficient policing service that we can be., he said.

Mayor David Gillan said after the announcement said the city will see economic benefits with the central training hub, as permanent and visiting officers will be using city facilities and businesses during their time here.

Right now, there’s no official timeline as to when the repurposed building will officially open.
