Battlefords Citizens on Patrol receives $500 donation from SGEU

The Battlefords Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP) recently received a donation of $500 from the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees’ Union (SGEU) Local 1103, the Battlefords.

The COPP is a non-profit crime prevention organization based in the Battlefords that works closely with local protective services, acting as another set of eyes and ears for the RCMP and Community Safety Officers, conducting patrols throughout the community to help discourage crime and report suspicious activity as needed.

Chairperson of the Citizens on Patrol program, Doug Fehr said the $500 donation will go a long way to cover increased expenses as the program has continued to grow in recent years.

“We’ve got increased costs this year as a result of being more active with patrols and doing more training and obtaining more equipment, so it means a lot,” he said. “We do receive some funding from the city and the town, but it’s important to have other organizations step forward for us as well.”

Other typical expenses for the COPP include reimbursing patrollers for their expended fuel while on patrols, covering costs for attending workshops, and the ongoing expenses required for meetings, events and display inventory (such as renting a table and affording informational booth supplies/pamphlets) to help spread awareness for the program at community events.

In addition to the $500 donation, Fehr said it has also been encouraging to learn several SGEU members from the area also plan to join the COPP moving forward.

“That can help to make a really significant difference in crime prevention, so we were really pleased to hear that, in addition to the donation,” he said.

The COPP is one of about 120 such groups across Canada, designed to cut down on crime and assist emergency personnel. SGEU represents 20,000 members who live and work across the province.
